At a time when travel has been severely limited and social connections have been distilled down to virtual meetings, perhaps the most important thing to remember is our shared humanity. Kerala Tourism has recently launched a campaign called Human by Nature in which they tap into this sentiment, spotlighting the interplay of humans and the earth.
From powerful human stories to devastatingly beautiful imagery of India, the campaign video transports one both emotionally and mentally to the wild beauty of Kerala. We see elephants roam languidly through verdant jungles kissed by veils of grey fog, rolling waves crashing upon sugary sand beaches, sticky homemade treats being served from rickety river boats — it is a beautiful reminder of the magic of travel and the richness of cultures beyond our own.
Kerala is a state on India’s tropical Malabar Coast known for its palm-lined beaches and network of canals. Inland rests rolling mountains and plantations bursting with coffee and Indian spices. In short, Kerala captures the imagination in a way many destinations wish they could. While I had never made it down to Kerala on that first visit, I remember the power that India had to transform my life. In fact, this very website was born out of that trip to India. At the time, someone I had been traveling with told me something that rang true for me: India may not always give you what you want, but it will find a way to give you exactly what you need. For me, it was the power to find clarity in my life, reconnect with gratitude, and to dare to dream of my next steps.
I find this simple quote to hold so much weight for a country that —for the outside observer — is shrouded in mystery and magic. What I love about this particular Human by Nature campaign is its reminder of what waits for each of us once the world opens up, economies stabilize, and the pandemic is a memory.
One day, my friends, we will be able to venture far beyond our homes, neighborhoods, and countries to reconnect with the magic of travel, the beauty of discovering new cultures, and the hope in connecting with other humans.
